Do garden ponds freeze in winter?

The surface can freeze in a hard winter, but a well-designed pond with enough depth stays liquid below, and life sits out the cold there. We design in the depth and, where there are fish, a way to keep a small area open. A pond looks after itself through winter far more than people expect.
